Agent skill in the open SKILL.md format

A working color library for AI agents.

chromary is a portable skill that helps compatible AI agents research, design, evaluate, and explain color palettes: brand palettes, UI color systems, data visualization sets, and palettes from images. It computes WCAG contrast, builds OKLCH ramps, and exports tokens your project can paste in.

Free and open. The ZIP contains a folder with SKILL.md and its references; extract it into your client's skills directory. See compatibility for per client paths.

Overview

One repo to rule every color decision.

No more 40 tab chaos. chromary fuses APIs, perceptual color spaces, accessibility math, scientific colormaps, design system scales and AI palette generation into one opinionated toolkit.

Curated & opinionated

200+ hand picked resources, star rated with TL;DR tables and pitfalls in every guide. The vault tells you what to use, and what to skip.

Agent ready

Six drop in SKILL.md skills plus a working MCP server. Agents don't memorize hex codes, they compute them.

Actually runnable

Nine copy paste recipes and the zero dependency Chroma Lab. Every snippet tested, every claim sourced.

The Vault: 16 deep dive guides.

Every guide is a standalone Markdown doc in the repo, star rated with a TL;DR table at the top. Start with the ones your task needs.

Recipes

Nine copy paste superpowers.

Small, tested files you can paste into any project. JavaScript, Python and CSS, each one does one job well.

Examples

Output you can paste straight in.

Rendered live by this page: no images, no JS libraries. The ramp below uses native CSS oklch(), the way the skill exports tokens.

Perceptual OKLCH ramp

One hue, chroma bell curve, 50 → 950.

Mesh gradient

Four radial OKLCH blobs, zero images.

Semantic tokens

Paste ready CSS custom properties.

/* this page's own theme */
--bg: #F7F6F2; /* paper */
--surface: #FFFFFF;
--text: #202521; /* ink */
--primary: #225C48; /* pine */
--accent: #D9EF72; /* citron */
--alert: #C85B43; /* coral */

Install

Two minutes to a color-engineer agent.

Works with Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and any SKILL.md-aware runtime.

Install the skills

git clone https://github.com/izynu/chromary.git
mkdir -p .claude/skills
cp -r chromary/skills/* .claude/skills/

Per-project, versioned with your repo. Global install: ~/.claude/skills/ instead. Then just ask naturally: "give me a palette that matches #225C48".

Give it live tools (MCP)

cd chromary/mcp/example-color-server
bun install && bun run index.ts

A working stdio MCP server with generate_palette and color_info tools. Full config for Claude Desktop, Cursor & VS Code in the MCP registry.

About

The armory of color.

chromary is free, open source software under the MIT license. Free for humans and agents alike. It stands on the shoulders of giants: Björn Ottosson (OKLab/OKLCH), Myndex (APCA), Fabio Crameri (scientific colormaps), Cynthia Brewer (ColorBrewer), and the maintainers of culori, colorjs.io and chroma.js.

Contributions are extremely welcome, adding a resource takes two minutes. Read CONTRIBUTING.md and be excellent to each other.
